And God said to them, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion..." Genesis 1:28 (So they did.)
Feeders filled with seed stay full as weeks of February pass. There's been so little snow that finches find the thistles standing high in fence rows, out beyond the city boundary, and chickadees are glad to hackle pine cones or pick nutlets from the alders growing out of naked stones.
Now are left to comfort us, and only once each winter week, a myriad fleet of carrion crows escorting trash collectors. We have assumed dominion. We devise our own extinction while the singing birds survive and thrive. We need them back to animate our bitumen and brick.
